These women are moving from agricultural labor to running pickle businesses, selling organic vegetables, or managing PDS shops. For them, culture means breaking the purdah (veil system) to attend bank meetings.
While tea ( chai ) remains the national lubricant, a new generation of urban Indian women is normalizing wine and whiskey. Until a decade ago, a woman drinking alcohol was taboo. Today, "Soda and Shukto" (a bitter Bengali dish) has given way to "Gin and Tonic" at upscale bars. However, for the majority of rural women, drinking is still a male-only privilege.
