Dangal is based on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a wrestler from the village of Balali in Haryana, India. Born in 1956, Mahavir was an avid wrestler who represented India at the Commonwealth Games. However, his dreams of winning a medal for India were shattered when he failed to do so. Undeterred, Mahavir decided to channel his energy into training his daughters, Geeta and Babita, to become wrestlers.
