Frank Morris, a seasoned bank robber and escape artist, was the mastermind behind the daring heist. Born in 1926, Morris had already escaped from several prisons before being sentenced to Alcatraz in 1960. Clarence Anglin, born in 1931, and his brother John, born in 1930, were from Georgia and had been involved in a string of bank robberies. The three men were determined to escape and had been planning their getaway for months.

On the evening of June 11, 1979, the three men put their plan into action. They climbed up to the roof and began their journey across the prison's exterior walls. Using a homemade rope made from over 50 raincoats, they rappelled down to the ground and made their way to the shore.
