The series is set in ancient Rome, around 73 BCE, and revolves around the life of Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator who becomes the leader of a slave uprising against the Roman Republic. The story begins with Spartacus (played by Andy Whitfield) as a prisoner of war, who is forced to become a gladiator in a Ludus, a gladiatorial school, in Capua.
